About CoreDirections

I’m Sean Mack and I offer consultancy services under the banner of CoreDirections Consulting. The name-choice “CoreDirections” reflects my focus on supporting and resourcing aged care organisations to move forward by recognising, celebrating and drawing on their positive core – their defining purpose, core values, beliefs, capacity, and fundamental strengths.

Integral to this positive core is '“person-centredness”. In my recent research, I defined person-centredness as a broad term relating to residents, family members, staff, and managers – everyone across the residential aged care community. While broadly inclusive, it also embraces the person-centred care of residents more specifically. It is about putting people at the centre, building an affirming and inclusive culture that encompasses the entire aged care community. The test of this culture is that it’s felt everywhere, starting from personal interactions, relationships, and day-to-day activities, moving to systems and procedures, and culminating in overall direction and external reputation.

I have been involved in aged care for the last 25 years in various roles, as a consultant, accreditation quality assessor, and researcher. In 2022, I completed my PhD exploring the link between person- centredness and leadership in residential aged care. I have a long-standing curiosity about how organisations work and how to make them more human. Building on an early career in community services, I have 40 years of experience in organisational development and improvement, as a practitioner, executive manager, and self-employed consultant.

During my 15-year public sector career (1984-1999), I had in-house roles focused on organisational capacity-building, such as staff development, management development, corporate planning, and quality management. My consulting work (since 1999) has included quality assessment, organisational reviews, and cultural change projects.

Drawing on my PhD, my current interests are researching and consulting to create person-centred environments and cultures in residential aged care.
